Light After the Storm

Five words sum up the huge task facing hundreds if not thousands of families devastated by a barrage of storms hitting our the country lately."WE HAVE TO START AGAIN." Stripped of their houses and belongings, they face daunting questions: Where will we live? How do we replace possessions? How can we rebuild homes and lives?

We have had harrowing experiences and sustained huge losses and we all know firsthand the severity of the challenge. But we have also learned that out of devastation and destruction and floods, we can help each other and can rise a new life - often radically different, but one with new perspectives and reordered priorities.

Our people who have had this forced on them to make changes, and in the process of doing this, we must discover a better version of ourselves. And must exploit and use our innate and different skills and abilities to rise up amidst the adversities. We must learn from our past lessons and move on this time with great respect for the environment, for ourselves forget self interests and rise up as one nation. We must must never give up hope.

Although holding on to hope during such a difficult time as many are now experiencing is not easy. The temptation is to give in to the pain and suffering, forgetting that every experience of seeming darkness has light within it. What light, you might wonder, exists within the suffering from the wake of from the storms which hit our country Love,Hope and Faith. Never have I experienced a crisis within my own life, or within the world, that hasn't triggered support, compassion and love, this is what we need as a people and this is what we need as citizens of this country. As Mahatma Gandhi wisely stated, "When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won." The media may not be focusing on the truth and love, but that doesn't mean it's not there. Holding on to hope means remembering that we are all one and crisis and suffering join us together each of us, no matter how "small" our effort or contribution may seem, makes a huge difference; suffering is part of our human experience and allows us to become more compassionate people only the love is real. Nothing real can be threatened, nothing unreal exists, herein lies the peace of God.

Good (and bad ) Samaritans

Efforts by the media and NGO's to gather relief goods for our unfortunate kababayans who's lives were shattered and properties destroyed by typhoon Ondoy have been successful so far. This only shows that Bayanihan is very much alive in us Filipinos. The internatinal community have also done their share of help in response to the appeal of the government for assistance to our kababayan victims of typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) among were countries such as Australia, China, Vietnam, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, the United States and France, and organizations like the UN World Food Program and World Health Organization.

Vietnam pledged rice aid as it awaited the imminent arrival of Ketsana.

Vietnam would send about $208,333 worth of rice, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC). Japan sent emergency relief goods worth about $220,000.

As a tropical storm, Ondoy dumped more than 40 centimeters (15 inches) of rain on Metro Manila and its surroundings, unleashing six-meter (20-foot) floods that killed at least 240 people, according to the latest official tally.

The floods affected nearly two million people, 375,000 of whom have sought shelter in schools, gyms and other makeshift camps, according to the government, which said it had been “overwhelmed.”

The Ambassador of Singapore A. Selverajah on Tuesday handed over US$30,000 of humanitarian relief supplies to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

Singapore has also contributed US$20,000 in seed money to kick start the Singapore Red Cross’ public drive for donations from Singaporeans for the victims.

In Australia, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told parliament his country would give up to A$1 million (US$874,920) in aid to the Philippines.

China on Monday said it was donating $10,000 to the Philippine National Red Cross.

But what the hell is this?!!(sorry for the expression and for lack of a better term...) the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that Speaker Prospero Nograles proposed that the representatives fork out only P20,000 each as their contribution to the relief efforts. I have not always been a critic of this government, and as a former employee of the House of Representatives i have always supported and tried to understand the ardous tasks of our lawmakers but this is too much...some of this lawmakers spend more than 20k for only one dinner at a 5 star hotel or even thousands of taxpayers money for their foreign travels and yet all that they can give is 20,000 pesos each? oh come on!

I have not been an ERAP fan or supporter, but so far sya pa lang ang nakita kong nagbigay ng pagkain at pera sa ating mga kababayan, the big question now is where are the Big Fishes asan na ang mga pulitiko na milyon milyon kung gumastos sa kanilang mga tv ads, bakit hindi natin sila makita ngayon na kailangan sila ng ating mga kababayan. Are they saving their precious millions for the campaign period? just asking...

Luke 10:30-37 Jesus answered, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.’ Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?" He said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

In this times of sorrow let us all be good samaritans to our neighbors. Let us continue our Bayanihan to support and help our needy kababayans, every little help counts.

ONE

"What have we becometh..."

With the recent athrocities in Mindanao between soldiers and the abu sayyaf, I couldn't help but to make one very last post at least for now.. one of my friend's family was a victim she asked me not to mention her name in this blog, hence all I can do is to post a video of one of my favorite songs from U2, I hope this brings a good message to all the people in this country. It is so difficult to think of a solution to solve the conflict in Mindanao considering that it has been existing eversince if you have a solution please contribute your views...I still hope and pray that peace will soon be achieved in the said region, and I wish that the next administration would find concrete ways to end the Mindanao conflict. So many innocent lives have already been destroyed, so many families broken and so many innocent children shattered by the horrors of war caused by this senseless conflict now exacerbated by unscrupulous politicians taking advantage of the media hype, lawless elements and terrorists.
